President Trump recently proposed a $277 Million for the implementation of abstinence only education in schools across America. He simultaneously argued for the removal of federal funding for Planned Parenthood, an organization that provides everything from free STD and cancer screenings to safe abortions for women. Trump’s potential plan is a catch 22 for young adults everywhere, providing faulty information and failing to meet the impending consequences of abstinence only education- misuse of contraceptives, increase in sexually transmitted infections, and unwanted pregnancies. According to advocatesforyouth.org, “Many of the curricula commonly used in abstinence-only programs distort information about the effectiveness of contraceptives, misrepresent the risks of abortion, blur religion and science, treat gender stereotypes as scientific fact, and contain basic scientific errors.” Studies show that abstinence education ultimately proves ineffective, as teen sex rates remain at 17 and 18 years old. When teens lack basic information about safe sex, they continue to engage in sexual activity in an unsafe manner regardless. Furthermore, Trump’s desire to remove government funding from organizations like Planned Parenthood deplete affordable resources for young adults and teens who have learned from solely abstinence based sex education classes.

Sex education is a right that all teens deserve, but rarely fully receive. According to Health and Research Funding, “Only 13 states require that the information provided in a sex education class be medically accurate and contain verifiable facts.” Currently, the future of these programs is a bleak one. Trump’s proposal proves just how far America has to go before reaching a brighter, more informed future. With the help of young voices steering the conversation, perhaps our generation can be the change that is desperately needed, and that teens so rightly deserve.
