Recently, actor, comedian and supporter of the #MeToo movement Aziz Ansari has been accused of sexual misconduct earlier this month. The woman, who is referred to as “Grace” to protect her identity, went on a date with Ansari after they met at the 2017  Emmy Awards.

Jaclyn Friedman, who is a writer, speaker and activist hopes “that #MeToo will scare men into finally paying attention to women as people”

Grace states that she had an uncomfortable encounter with Ansari. During this encounter she engaged in sexual activity with Ansari,  but she also denied Ansari’s advances with verbal and nonverbal cues.

Grace expressed her discomfort in a text message to Ansari the night after the date. He apologized saying that he had “misread things in the moment.” He stated that “by all indications [the sexual activity was] completely consensual.”

There have been responses to the original article where people have said that it is “merely describing a bad date, while others have characterized Ansar’s behavior as sexual assault.”

Either way, Grace has expressed how she felt and now it is in the hands of the public for them to determine what they think happened from this article. Rather it be a bad date, or sexual assault is not the problem. What the problem is that this is an ordinary occurrence and that is why we have to talk about it.

Recently, in just the past year, many of our former favorite directors and actors have been accused of sexual assault. Many have had to come to terms with what they have done and face the consequences of the lives that they have ruined.

More and more women are coming forward because they feel inspired and empowered by the ladies that have come forward before them. Women are uniting to fight against rape culture and the sexual harassment that they are facing. It is time that this ends and the accusers suffer the consequences they deserve. #TimesUp.
